Keeneland Connections Earn Eclipse Awards

LEXINGTON, KY (Jan. 17, 2016) – Keeneland congratulates the 2015 champions announced last night at the 45thAnnual Eclipse Awards Ceremony at Gulfstream Park. Four champions sold at Keeneland and/or competed here during the 2015 Spring or Fall Meets: 

  • Spendthrift Farm purchased multiple Grade 1 winner Beholder, champion older dirt female, for $180,000 at Keeneland’s 2011 September Yearling Sale from the consignment of breeder Clarkland Farm. The daughter of Henny Hughes also was a champion at two and three.
  • Nyquist, champion 2-year-old male, is a graduate of two Keeneland auctions. In 2013, Paramount Sales, agent, consigned him as a weanling to the November Breeding Stock Sale, where he was purchased by Madison Farm for $180,000. At the 2014 September Sale, consignor Dromoland Farm, agent, sold Nyquist to Sutton Place Stables for $230,000. The Uncle Mo colt won the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Keeneland to close his undefeated campaign.   
  • Owner Jim McIngvale purchased champion male sprinter Runhappy for $200,000 at the 2013 September Sale from the consignment of breeder Ashview Farm, agent. After winning the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G3) during the Fall Meet, the colt by Super Saver captured the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Keeneland.
  • Champion female turf horse Tepin, by Bernstein, won the First Lady (G1) during the Fall Meet. She next took the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Keeneland.

Two other equine champions also triumphed at Keeneland during the 2015 Breeders’ Cup World Championships: Horse of the Year and 3-year-old male American Pharoah won the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), and 2-year-old filly Songbird won the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Other champions who competed in the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland were Big Blue Kitten (male turf horse), Honor Code (older dirt male), La Verdad (female sprinter) and Stellar Wind (3-year-old filly).

Another Keeneland-connected champion is Javier Castellano, named outstanding jockey. During the Spring Meet, Castellano was the leading rider with 21 victories, including four stakes: Maker’s 46 Mile (G1) on Jack Milton, Jenny Wiley (G1) on Ball Dancing, Ben Ali (G3) on Protonico, and Transylvania (G3) Presented by Keeneland Select on Night Prowler.
