Keeneland Sales Graduates Shine at Del Mar

July 21, 2016

LEXINGTON, KY (July 22, 2016) – As Del Mar near San Diego, Calif., enters its second weekend of racing for its 2016 summer meet, we look back at its 2015 summer season when Keeneland sales graduates thrived “where the surf meets the turf.”

Keeneland sales graduates won 11 of Del Mar’s 21 graded stakes last year, including:

  • Five of seven Grade 1 races.
  • Five of 10 Grade 2 races.

All are graduates of Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale, whose 2016 edition runs Sept. 12-25.

Leading the stars of Del Mar’s 2015 summer season were champion Beholder (2011 September) and future champion and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Nyquist (2013 November/2014 September).

Beholder, who is on an eight-race win streak, won Del Mar’s premier event, the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic (G1), by 8¼ lengths to become the first female to defeat males in the 25-year history of the race. Her Del Mar dominance began with a seven-length win in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1) against fillies and mares.

Nyquist, named the year’s champion 2-year-old male, also won two races during the Del Mar summer meet, the Best Pal (G2) and Del Mar Futurity (G1). His undefeated run later included victories in Kentucky for the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Keeneland and the Kentucky Derby.

Joining Beholder and Nyquist were these graded stakes winners:

Appealing Tale (2010 November/2011 September): Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2).

Gabriel Charles (2011 September): Eddie Read Stakes (G1).

Om (2013 September): Del Mar Derby (G2).

Pretty N Cool (2014 September): Sorrento Stakes (G2).

Sharla Rae (2013 September, Del Mar Oaks (G1).

She’s Not Here (2012 September): Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2).

Taris (2012 September): Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G2).

Keeneland September Graduates Continue to Shine in 2016

Keeneland Sales graduates continued their dominance into 2016, sweeping Del Mar’s opening weekend graded stakes topped by grade 1 winner Midnight Storm (2012 September) earning a determined score in the Eddie Read (G2).

Also gracing the winner’s circle was She’s Not Here (2012 September) with her second consecutive victory in the Yellow Ribbon H. (G2).
